Kanazawa is located close at the gravity center of Japan. When you put the map upside down, it is easy to recognize and memorize the location of Kanazawa as“at the center of the Japanese islands arc”. There is other big city called Kanagawa close to Tokyo, a little difference in spelling,“z” or “g”, and also, a subtle difference in pronunciation. Kanagawa may be rather popular because of the size of the city and also known to accommodate an important base for US forces. But in Japanese spelling, two cities have totally different meanings. Kanazawa means “Golden creek”, and named after the fact that the historic gold mine was located, goes back to a few hundred years ago. Still, Kanazawa has a gold leaf industry, because the technique to manipulate gold is inherited without depletion. Kanagawa have a totally different meaning translated as “God river”.
